Sydney DBS is a multidisciplinary team of experienced independent medical and allied health practioners working collaboratively to care for patients who elect to undergo Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) procedures. These patients may have Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia or Tourette’s syndrome.
SNNS Neurosurgeon Dr Raymond Cook, and Surgical assistant Dr George Fracchia have been operating together since the 1990’s. Prior to 2001, they performed lesional surgery for Parkinson’s disease and tremor disorders. Dr Cook performed his first Deep Brain Stimulation procedure in 2001, convinced that the newer techniques and hardware was robust enough to provide long term efficacy in Parkinson’s disease. He has now implanted over 430 DBS systems for Parkinson’s disease and a variety of other conditions including dystonia, tremor and Tourette’s syndrome.
A clinical collaboration with Neurologist Dr Silberstein formed in 2004 on Dr Silberstein’s return from the UK where he had undertaken studies toward a Doctorate in Neurophysiology. Dr Linton Meagher, Neuropsychiatrist became involved in surgical work up and post operative management of patients on completion of his Masters of Psychiatry in DBS in 2007.
Nathan Anderson, has been a dedicated Radiographer to the team since 2011.

- Over 400 patients treated in over 15 years.
- Very low complication rate.
- Perform >120 procedures per year (approx. 40 new systems and over 80 battery replacements)
- Improved quality of life.
- Ongoing care and consultation with Sydney DBS specialists and Sydney DBS trained Neurologists post-surgery
Currently, Sydney DBS is working with Parkinson’s NSW to drive awareness about treatments, living with PD and the Deep Brain Stimulation program. We also work with Shake It Up to support ongoing vital research for PD. Shake It Up work closely with the Michael J Fox Foundation in the USA who focus closely on aggressive fund research in aid to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with PD. The Sydney DBS team attends and speaks at events with both Parkinson’s NSW and Shake It Up throughout the year to drive awareness about the disease, treatments, health and wellbeing, passionately building strong community presence and to answer questions the community may have in a friendly environment.
Working with our Australian Government:
In 2006 and 2008 Dr Raymond Cook headed an application with the Australian Government to ensure that patients could get a Medicare rebate on their DBS procedure. Without these assessment reports, patients would not be able to receive funding from Medicare for their treatments. These reports outline the true safety and effectiveness of the DBS treatment for PD sufferers. The Minister for Health and Ageing accepted the recommendation on 24 August 2006. Dr Raymond Cook and supporting health professionals are proud of this achievement for the Australian community.
